My background was originally in Pathology. I studied my Certificate III in Laboratory Skills before moving onto Certificate III in Pathology. I worked in Pathology for about two years in Queensland before moving back to Victoria.

I initially applied for a job in Concrete Testing before being offered a job in the Quarry as a Laboratory Technician with Boral, which I have been at for two years as of next week! Even though I sort of fell into this job and it is different to what I had previously studied, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
The MSL40118 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques is a requirement for the role I’m currently doing, however I would have completed it at some stage regardless.

The course was relatively easy for me, having received credit transfers and already working in the industry. The parts that I did find challenging I was able to seek help from my trainer, Gavan.

Gavan has been pretty flexible with everyone’s learning, given I had credit transfers he helped me complete my course in a quicker time period. He was also available to answer any questions via email if I needed help and would prompt me to improve my answers or evidence of workplace learning should it be lacking.

I would do my coursework during any downtime. A co-worker is also doing the course, so we would allocate time for each of us to work through the coursework.
