About
This qualification equips students with practical skills in drawing blood, administering first aid, participating in workplace health and safety, implementing infection control and more.
The course is designed to provide hands-on industry experience and focuses on promoting technical skill and effective communication techniques, preparing students for work in a variety of medical environments, including pathology collection centres, GP clinics, specialist rooms, hospitals, and other public and private health settings.

IS A CAREER IN PATHOLOGY COLLECTION FOR YOU?
Pathology collectors (also known as phlebotomists) are health care professionals who work as part of larger medical teams in collection centres, hospitals, doctors’ offices, and diagnostic laboratories. The care and attention taken by phlebotomists during sample collection is a critical part of patient care. With an ageing population and the accessibility of new diagnostic methods, doctors and hospitals need pathology collectors and phlebotomists to obtain samples and arrange testing of blood and tissue products.

Duration & delivery
Face-to-face classes are held at our training centre. We're just a two minute walk from Parramatta train station.

The total course duration is 16 weeks plus 35 hours of clinical work placement. The course structure is:

Face-to-face at our training centre
Class times are 9am-4pm on either Mondays and Tuesdays or Thursdays and Fridays (depending on intake). Classes are occasionally held on different days of the week due to public holidays and office closure days, therefore the face-to-face component may be longer than 10 weeks
Unpaid clinical work placement
At least 35 hours, typically completed over 1-2 weeks
Scheduled on your behalf with one of our partner pathology providers
Timing subject to delays (although we endeavour to schedule placements to begin as soon as classes are complete, exact timing depends on the availability of positions with our industry partners)

$3,990 - fee for service student tuition fee
To secure your place in class, a $300 deposit is payable upon enrolment (cash and EFT facilities are available). This amount is deducted from the total course fee. Weekly, fortnightly or monthly direct debit payment plans are available to distribute payments of the remaining balance ($3,690) over the 16 week period.

Work placement
Students are required to organise and cover the costs of their own travel arrangements to attend placement, and we are unable to accommodate requests for specific providers or locations.
Students are encouraged to make every effort to be available and attend the placement booked for them. If a student is unable to attend an allocated work placement, a rescheduling fee of $350 will be charged per alternative placement required. Placement shifts that are missed (in whole or part) without a medical certificate will incur a rescheduling fee of $150 per alternative shift required to make up the necessary hours. Additional placements and shifts are scheduled at the discretion of the placement provider and may be subject to delays.
Assessment
Students are assessed on their performance in practical and written assessments; online learning modules; and a minimum of 20 live blood collections conducted in simulated and actual clinical work environments (work insurance cover is provided and paid for by LTT for the duration of work placement).
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) and credit transfer processes are available. Please contact our team on 1300 588 588 to discuss these options further if you believe you may be eligible for RPL or credit transfer (for equivalent units of competency completed previously). A copy of the original transcript must be provided if applying for a credit transfer.
Should you withdraw before completing the course and / or your clinical work placement hours, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units of competency achieved.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive the HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection, which will carry the Nationally Recognised Training logo.
Requirements
Please note: Students must provide evidence of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (or a valid medical exemption form) to be permitted to complete work placement with most clinical providers in Australia, including LTT’s health industry partners. Work placement is a mandatory component of the HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection and as such, the qualification cannot be awarded to any student who has not completed the required hours. A statement of attainment (for any units of competency successfully completed) will be issued in place of the full qualification to students unable to complete work placement.
Additionally, all students must comply with any relevant state government regulations regarding COVID-19 vaccinations that are applicable during their training. Please visit healthdirect.gov.au/coronavirus-covid-19-information-by-state-and-territory for the latest information.
No prior qualifications are required to study this qualification, however basic to intermediate computer literacy is advantageous. As part of the application and enrolment process, candidates must:
Complete a pre-training review (including a language, literacy and numeracy assessment).
Students must:
Be at least 18 years old at the time of work placement.
Supply evidence of vaccination, commencement of vaccination, or immunity for hepatitis B.
Supply evidence of COVID-19 vaccination.
Wear a blue polo shirt (supplied by LTT) and black pants or skirt during work placement; closed-in shoes throughout the course and work placement; and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as instructed during practical training.
Undertake blood collection on peers during the course (students practice on classmates as well as friends and family who volunteer to attend class with the student).
Please note: Students are responsible for arranging and covering the cost of these requirements. To avoid delays in securing your work placement, we ask that students submit these documents as soon as possible following enrolment. There can be significant timelines associated with certain vaccinations, so it is important to visit your doctor and commence any outstanding vaccinations in a timely manner.
To be eligible to commence face-to-face training, students must complete all relevant eLearning tasks and upload any required documentation (including vaccination / immunity evidence).
To be eligible for a work placement allocation, students must complete all face-to-face training days and required tasks; settle any outstanding course fees; and demonstrate sufficient skill in venous blood collection (the course delivery and duration allows the average learner to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge, however students may be required to attend additional training hours to practice and demonstrate competence).

Please note: We work closely with industry and design our programs to best equip graduates for employment. We advise students to treat work placement as an extended job interview (as providers may recruit new hires from the pool of students on placement in their facilities). However, there is no job outcome guaranteed after finishing a qualification.
