  • This qualification equips students with practical skills in planning and conducting laboratory field work, recording and presenting data, performing basic tests and standard calibrations, maintaining a laboratory and more.

    The course focuses on safety and aims to prepare students for entry level jobs as laboratory personnel, including laboratory assistants, instrument operators, and more.

  • Total duration: 15 weeks

    Training centre location: Level 2/23 Wentworth St, Parramatta (2 minute walk from Parramatta train station)

    Classroom delivery:

    • 9am-4pm, 2 days a week over 15 weeks (30 training days) | Face-to-face at the training centre

    Classes are held Mon-Tue or Thu-Fri, depending on the intake. Public holidays may occasionally require classes to be held on alternative days and cause extensions to the course duration.

  • Student co-contribution fees (government-supported):

    • $0 - fee-exempt / fee-free | Includes (e.g.) 17-24 year olds; unemployed; employed but expected to become unemployed; Commonwealth Government welfare recipients; scholarship recipients

    • $240 - concession | Payable upon enrolment

    • $2,680 - prior qualification: certificate I or lower / no prior qualification | Payment plans available

    • $3,220 - prior qualification: certificate II or higher | Payment plans available

    Student tuition fee (full fee-paying):

    • $4,680 - fee-for-service | Includes $300 deposit payable upon enrolment (payment plans are available for the remaining balance)

  • Students are assessed on their performance in:

    • Practical & written assessments

    Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive the MSL30122 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills, bearing the Nationally Recognised Training logo. Should you withdraw before completing all course requirements, you will be issued a Statement of Attainment for any units of competency achieved.

    Recognition of prior learning (RPL) and credit transfer processes and information are available during application.

  • Prior qualifications: Not required

    Recommended computer literacy: Basic

    Students must:

    • Complete a pre-training review (including a language, literacy and numeracy assessment) as part of the application and enrolment process.

    • Be at least 17 years old.

    • Wear closed-in shoes throughout the course and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as instructed during practical training.

  • There are a total of 13 units of competency in this qualification.

    • BSBCMM211 Apply communication skills

    • MSL933009 Contribute to the achievement of quality objectives

    • MSL913004 Plan and conduct laboratory/field work

    8 elective units:

    • MSL973025 Perform basic tests

    • MSL953005 Receive and prepare samples for testing

    • MSL933008 Perform calibration checks on equipment and assist with its maintenance

    • MSL944002 Maintain laboratory or field workplace safety

    • MSMENV272 Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices

    • MSL973028 Perform microscopic examination

    • MSL973026 Prepare working solutions

    • MSL934010 Maintain and control stocks
