Real student review: Jay Lane April 19, 2022 Sarah Knuckey How Jay Lane moved from working in the media to the pathology industry. “I’m 53, a proud father of a son and grandfather of two granddaughters and originally started my career in the military, and served 7 years in the Royal Australian Airforce, I shifted careers a couple of times and worked in marketing, training and ultimately the media. I spent around 20 years in the media and read the news on national television as well as reported on all the major television and radio networks, eventually becoming the helicopter reporter for Channel Ten/CBS as well as a state operations manager. I eventually felt no job satisfaction and every day seemed to be ground hog day. After going for regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests a couple of times a year, I found myself becoming more and more curious in pathology collection and the complexities that come with it. I began researching phlebotomy and the more I found out, the more I realised that it was something I really wanted to do. I originally commenced my studies with another training provider. I secured a job in COVID-19 testing with 4Cyte Pathology with the ultimate goal of transitioning into blood collection with them. After having continual issues with my training provider, I started collaborating with colleagues at 4Cyte Pathology – majority of them had studied with LTT! The more they told me about LTT’s training and how professional and practical it is, the more I realised that I wasn’t getting the best training from my existing provider. I withdrew and commenced with LTT Brisbane. My only regret is that I didn’t study the HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection sooner! It was extremely professional, sometimes even fun and very hands-on. What I found extremely beneficial is that the trainers had extensive experience and real-life skills and tips. My trainer Mirta was wonderful, and really took the time to ensure you understood everything and built confidence in our own abilities. Her encouragement of students, working with them to excel was second to none. I lost confidence once or twice and my trainer Mirta worked with me to get the best out of me and taught me valuable skills to gain confidence and taught me how to not second guess myself. My favourite part of the course was bleeds of course! This was the main part of the course that I was told about by my 4Cyte Pathology colleagues that LTT offered. It was the opportunity to put into practice everything that we learned right then and there. In the classroom sessions, we all got to take each other’s blood in each session, this was valuable in building confidence, giving you real experience and preparing you for job placement. I am so fascinated about the whole pathology collection process! We learnt that some tests require us to use the centrifuge and to aliquot. It was so much fun and extremely enjoyable. For every part of training, Mirta had a real-life experience story to share, which provided additional insight into the industry outside of the classroom. This course far exceeded my expectations and can’t thank LTT enough for preparing me with real skills for my new career.I’m so very fortunate that I already had a job with 4Cyte Pathology so my focus now is to complete my job placement and work towards my final goal of having my own clinic which is not far away!I have already been recommending this course! I have brought quite a few new students through the LTT doors. I will continue to highly recommend LTT – they are a training provider that is extremely professional, caring and above all, very engaging with students from start to finish.I just want to share my sincerest gratitude because this course has changed my life and the direction of my career when I needed it the most.” — Jay Lane, HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection student
