Real student review: Chris Leivesley

Before enrolling at LTT I was studying science, and volunteering for Red Cross. I chose to study the HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection with LTT Brisbane as it was cheaper and faster than TAFE. I was very impressed by the introductory session too.

My training was excellent. The course was very focused on practical preparation. My favourite part of the course was how the Trainers focused on getting students ready for the workforce. We would practice on each other immediately and frequently, which was a huge advantage. My Trainer, Mirta, used her own experiences to frame lessons as real examples.

I am now working for QML as a phlebotomist. At the moment, my major role is manning various drive-throughs; I’ve also spent the early stages of the outbreak performing private covid collections on clients in quarantine or being regularly screened. I’m a reliever, so I typically bounce between clinics in Brisbane. Sometimes I will fill-in at a clinic for several days while the regular collector is away.

My daily duties are blood collection, urea breath tests, urine and faeces collection, stock sorting, cleaning. Patients are consistently friendly. A fundamental skill I didn’t bother to pick-up at LTT was the ability to quickly read tests on a request and bin them by collection tube and department. I didn’t anticipate the ubiquity of rule three requests or the importance of being able to rapidly write and SAMCO referrals.
