  • This qualification builds technical ability in the use of laboratory application software, maintaining and controlling stock, performing chemical tests, and more.

    The course is designed to provide in-depth insight into the industry and focuses on promoting methodological competence, preparing students for technical jobs as laboratory personnel, including laboratory technicians, technical assistants, and more.

  • Total duration: 25 weeks

    Training centre location: 28 Russell St, South Brisbane (6 minute walk from the South Brisbane train station)

    Classroom delivery:

    • 8.30am-3:30pm, 2 days a week over 25 weeks (50 training days) | Face-to-face at the training centre

    Classes are held Mon-Tue or Thu-Fri, depending on the intake. Public holidays may occasionally require classes to be held on alternative days and cause extensions to the course duration.

  • Student co-contribution fees (government-supported), payable upon enrolment:

    • $650 - concession

    • $750 - non-concession

    Student tuition fee (full fee-paying):

    • $5,000 - fee-for-service | Includes $400 deposit payable upon enrolment (payment plans are available for the remaining balance)

    Co-contribution fees represent the total cost to the student to enrol in, undertake training, and be awarded the qualification. This course may exhaust your entitlement to further Queensland Government subsidised training, so please consider your training options carefully.

  • Students are assessed on their performance in:

    • Practical & written assessments

    Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive the MSL40122 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques, bearing the Nationally Recognised Training logo. Should you withdraw before completing all course requirements, you will be issued a Statement of Attainment for any units of competency achieved.

    Recognition of prior learning (RPL) and credit transfer processes and information are available during application.

  • Prior qualifications: Not required

    Recommended computer literacy: Basic

    Students must:

    • Complete a pre-training review (including a language, literacy and numeracy assessment) as part of the application and enrolment process.

    • Be at least 17 years old.

    • Wear closed-in shoes throughout the course and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as instructed during practical training.

  • There are a total of 16 units of competency in this qualification.

    4 core units:

    • MSL944002 Maintain laboratory or field workplace safety

    • MSL934008 Maintain instruments and equipment

    • MSL924005 Process and interpret data

    • MSL934009 Apply quality system and continuous improvement processes

    12 elective units:

    • MSL913004 Plan and conduct laboratory/field work

    • MSL924006 Use laboratory application software

    • MSL934010 Maintain and control stocks

    • MSL953005 Receive and prepare samples for testing

    • MSL954006 Relate anatomical and physiological features to laboratory samples

    • MSL973025 Perform basic tests

    • MSL973026 Prepare working solutions

    • MSL973027 Perform techniques that prevent cross-contamination

    • MSL974031 Prepare, standardise and use solutions

    • MSL974032 Perform chemical tests and procedures

    • MSL974036 Process body fluid specimens using a point of care testing device

    • MSMENV472 Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices
